Working with your hands just might be the key to happiness. Creating brings us into a world of honesty and humility, pride and passion, with undeniable reality that demands individual attention and requires us to step outside our self-absorbed selves. Creation instills a sense of self, giving us a realization of what can and cannot be controlled. It’s very empowering.
Hobby Club is pioneering the idea of using your hands to create something beautiful. Their yearlong adventure brings twelve new hobbies into people’s lives, one month at a time. It’s like hobby roulette; each one is a surprise. Members receive weekly emails with information, tips and homework so they can experience a hobby just well enough to know if they’ll want to pursue it further. And members have the opportunity to learn something new in the process.
Sparking the desire to explore more
We live in time of distraction where we’re immersed in information, messages and notifications — so much so that we’re losing the skills and desires to explore. Tyler Riewer, founder of Hobby Club, hopes to inspire focus and commitment for people to do something more productive. “When I’m older, I want to be able to tell my grandkids where earwax comes from, point out Cassiopeia in the sky or name what kind of tree that is. I want to know more!” Riewer’s vision should inspire us all — brands, companies, leaders, individuals and lost souls alike.
Creating for the sake of creation
Riewer has created a unique community of people who are connected by a willingness to learn any new craft Hobby Club sends them. These subscribers are saying yes to new ideas, making memories to share and learning new skills in the process. The inclusive environment motivates people to step outside their comfort zones and try something new.
Fostering an engaged environment
Members span the globe from industry professions to elementary school children alike. The positive reception of his idea is more than Riewer imagined when he started the club, with members sending emails inquiring about the next month’s hobby and proudly showcasing pictures of their creations. The community has come together around a shared love they’re proud to be a part of.
Cultivating inspiration and instilling humility
Hobby Club champions their members, encouraging them strive to learn new hobbies regardless of the level of difficulty or messiness. Communication and projects are tracked and supported with each hobby receiving a hashtag meant to inspire and motivate — #wellnowimcoveredinflour for breadmaking or #basicallyapioneer for candles and moonshine. For Riewer, “That’s the best part — knowing the project inspired someone to learn something new, and share their newfound knowledge. I’ve received messages from fans who’ve invited friends over to make butter! I get excited every time I see that.”
Spreading the ambition to learn
There’s lasting value in learning new skills through hobbies. Sometimes it takes hard work, but it only requires a desire to create and learn. The benefit of Hobby Club is in realizing that you can do it. You can make a baguette. You can make your own candles. You can learn anything if you simply have the desire to create.
